Von der oben genannten Einschränkung innerhalb des Marktes der Europäischen Union sind temporäre Lagerungen von Museumsgütern, Kirchen- und Kulturgut etc. in kontrollierten Atmosphären (Controlled Atmospheres) gegen negative Umwelteinflüsse (Klimaeinwirkungen, Korrosion, Physikalische Veränderungen) nicht betroffen.

The N2-fumigations are carried out in gasthight bubbles or enclosures. An anoxic atmosphere requires an enclosure, nitrogen gas, and oxygen monitoring device. Enclosures must be constructed of vapor impermeable materials such as steel or aluminized polyethylene films. There are several types of enclosures: hard-wall, soft-wall, and mobile chambers.

Gas supply from back-up gas tanks and on-site production of nitrogen from ambient air. The on-site Nitrogen generators feed the controlled atmosphere chambers for preservation and conservation of various artefact pieces.

Infobox: Hylotrupes bajulus, House Longhorn bettle: Hylotrupes is a monotypic genus of woodboring beetles in the family Cerambycidae known as old house borer. Hylotrupes preferentially attacks wood beams not older than 60-80 years. As the nutrient content of wood (proteins) decreases with age the larva has to consume larger amounts of wood. In open-air museums the infection of roof beams or blockhouse construction is very often seen.

The life cycle from egg to egg typically takes 2 to 10 years, mainly depending on the age of wood and quality, its moisture content, and also depending on environmental conditions such as temperature.
Only the larvae feed on the wood and solely on coniferous wood. Larvae usually pupate just beneath the wood surface and eclose in mid to late summer when ist warm.

Once the exoskeleton of the newly emerged adult beetle has hardened sufficiently the adults cut oval exit holes 6–10 mm in diameter, typically leaving coarse, powdery frass in the vicinity of the hole. Adults are most active in hot summer time.

At high temperature the beetles start to fly and spread the infestation. They are brown to black, appearing grey because of a fine grey furriness on most of the upper surface. Infestations of Hylotrupes are not often seen in depots or displays but in wooden constructions of open-air museums, historic buildings, window frames etc.
